In a professional musicproduction, the part that needs the most work will probably be Vocals. Vocal Editing and tracking can be the most extensive work on a full musicproduction. I will describe a bit how I do it, after receiving the Vocal Recording Session.

So, in the Vocal Recording Session there will be recorded a lot of different „takes“ from the singer. The producer ofcourse wants to ge the very best performance from the singer so it’s needed to record a lot of different vocal takes, to choose the very best from at the end.

Some producers already select final vocals during the recording session, other producers record a lot of vocals in different shades (like sang loud, medium, with more breath etc..) and do the selection at the end, to save time for the singer.

It will be unconvenient to import all single vocal tracks from a large recording session into your mixing session, so it’s needed to sort out and choose the best vocals, create clean vocal tracks and make stems of backing vocals, which can be used in the production / mixing session document (in Logic, Protools etc.).

I’m working with Logic Pro, and I always do the vocal recording in a new session document. I set the tempo of the song, import the playback of the song plus maybe some guidetracks for the vocalist. After the vocal recording session I will have a lot of different vocal tracks to choose from.

The next step would be, making the final selection of the very best vocal takes. With this you may – depending on the singer and song – end up with a different vocal take for each sung word or phrase, or just select of a few vocal takes that the singer sang almost perfectly through the whole song.

Mostly there are also some Main Vocals, Backing Vocals, Adlips and Double-Vocals which will be used to create a wider Stereo-Vocalsound.

After the final selection of vocals, all the selected parts has to be cutted and edited. It is needed to make Fade -Ins -Outs, and adjustments of timing. The breathing noises has to be cutted correctly (depending the song the breathing noises will be not cutted away!), and most important the regions has to be cutted clean that there will be no noise on parts where the singer doesn’t sing.

BildWhen the vocals are clean, it is needed to „consolidate“ or „merge“ them. In Logic Pro the function is called „merge“. It will create one region of all the selected vocal bits including it’s fade-in and –outs.

After that is done, it’s time to do some tuning of the vocals. It depends on the singer and song / musicgenre if that is needed or not, and in which way it will be done. Of course for rapvocals there will be no tuning in most cases! Mostly I will use Melodyne for that, and sometimes Autotune. When using Autotune it’s important to set Autotune on the correct key and select also „major“ or „minor“, and dont just leave it on „chromatic“ what some Engineers do if they can’t find out the right key! In Melodyne I’m using the standalone version, import the playback and vocals, and correct the tuning and timing of the vocals.

After that is done I will export the tuned vocals back to the session. Melodyne btw. Is also great to correct the timing of vocals. And another great tool is „Vocalign“, this is useful for Vocal Doubling, to set different vocal-Takes „tight“.

When the vocal editing and tuning is done, the next step is, preparing the vocal-tracks for the mixing session. For the backing vocals (if there are a lot of) it can be useful to make “stems” (several tracks bounced/mixed into one stereo-track) already. Because, in a mixing session that already has a lot of tracks, it will be unconvenient to import another 40 vocal tracks. Than it can become very useful to do a little bit pre-mixing already in the vocal editing session, like for example sending a bunch of backing-Vocal tracks to your favourite gear (EQ, Compressors, etc.) and record them back as a new stereo-track, to use that in the mixing session.

Bild (in this picture you see some single vocal tracks (blue at the bottom) going out to some gear, recording that back into the session.)

Sometimes while doing that, I already record also some analogue Effects which I’m going to use on the Vocals. At the end, just import your edited and clean vocal-tracks into your mixing session, that you can concentrate on your mix, and dont need to spend time on moving and cutting vocals during the mixing progress. If you have prepared your vocals very well, you will have a much more easy workflow during the mixing and final production of your song! In any case, that extra work is absolutely worth it for a professional musicprodution!

Stay tuned and thanks for reading!

A while ago at Creative Blue Musicproduction we were seeking for a new intern.

Of course there are some requirements, for people who want to „learn“ audio engineering and music production in a professional music studio.  Maybe in other recording studios it will be adequate to have just a little technical knowledge and interest in all the technical things in the studio. But for a music production this is far not enough! Because, we are a music production and mixingstudio, and we do produce own records including the songwriting, and we will expect from any new employees, interns and trainees, that they already understand something about music. And our interns will not just sit there and watch, they will have to do something!

It will be a great benefit if they can play an instrument, but this is not a must. But, they need to have a certain musical talent, they should be able to hear the chords and notes in a give song, and play or program them. So, the first thing an intern in my studio has to do is, making a lot of arrangements and remakes on given songs. The intern doesn’t need to have an audio engineering degree, rather a musical education, he can be also self-educated person.

The requirements for interns, assistants are:

-       must be able to hear chords and notes in a song

-       basic knowledge about music production and audio engineering

-       first experience in the software „Logic Pro“

-       first experience in recording or programming music with computers

-       a wide-ranging musical taste

-       technical understanding

-       reliability, respect and politely are indispensable!

If the trainee will have all of that, he will have great chances to learn a lot during it’s 6 – 9 months internship at Creative Blue Musicproduction. And, he will have the chance to become an assistant later and earn some money.

So, what will the trainee learn? We will teach our trainees all the things which are important to work in a professional music production studio. The things are listed below:

Duties and responsibilities for trainees at Creative Blue Musicproduction:

-       creating new arrangements of given songs

-       re-arranging and program certain songs and sounds onto a given example

-       preparing sessions for mixing

-       combining, comping and copying large sessions for mixing or further production

-       editing and sorting sessions for mixing

-       editing and sorting samples

-       creating sampler programs

-       combining, creating and copying templates, presets and mixing-setups

-       recording vocals

-       editing and tracking vocals

-       adjust intonation and timing of vocals with melodyne and autotune

-       replacing sounds in songs and sessions

-       hookup mics for recording

-       setup guitar & mics for guitar recording session

-       hookup mics for a drum recording session

-       create and understand analogue and digital setups for mixing

-       and a lot more!

During some of this work, the trainee will get a lot of ear training, and after 6 months he will be able to understand a lot about musical arrangements, and will also become better in hearing frequencies, which will be important for mixing and mastering. When a trainee decides to work in a studio and continues doing all these things, he can probably become “quite good” after a certain time, lets say after 2-4 years, and he can become “very good”, a real professional, after – lets say, 10 years of experience!!!!

Fader Riding! (mixdown, musicproduction)

Asfar as you’re doing a mixdown, for example with a DAW like LogicPro or Protools, the fader riding (Volume Automation) is a very important part of musicproduction when it comes to the mixing process. Riding the faders of vocals, instruments and drums finally is essential in a professional mixdown. In my opinion, the fader riding can have different functions.

1.) Create more dynamic and punch!
Riding the faders can give the production more “punch” and “dynamic”, for example a Kickdrum or Synth-track at the beginning of a new songsection can be put louder shortly, that it gives more power, only at the beginning of a songpart (Refrain for example).
Also instruments can be put down shortly to have more space for a punchy element. (it depends on musicgenre). A new instrument that comes in, can be faded up at its beginning, to catch the listener’s attention to it, afterwards it can be faded down again.

2.) Never loose the vocal
Riding instruments can be important to make space for the vocal and make it clear. For any instrument it can be necessary riding the fader down to don’t loose the vocal on certain words that you maybe don’t understand clearly. Also vice versa, riding the vocal and bring important words or notes up, especially important in genres like Pop / Singer-Songwriter / Ballad. For ex. in Ballad riding every word you can create the right feeling of the melody, so at the end it will sound more emotional sang, which can be good for the song if done right.

3.) Setting harmonies right
Riding to set the harmonies right means to make sure that you get all the notes of each chord balanced correctly. Balance it like you want to hear the right (and important) notes of a chord. Also, the note that the vocal sings, doesn’t have to be so loud played aswell by an instrument in some cases! (This depends on the song and music genre). I’m riding the harmonies especially on Backgroundvocals. Also if I have a lot of string-tracks, the riding is important to make sure that the right notes and melodies of the strings will come through.

4.) Creating dynamic in the whole song
In my mixing I also see me putting up some instruments in the last Refrain of the song, or sometimes riding the master fader aswell, for example giving it a half dB more on the Outchorus, or bring down the verses. Also, riding the Groups that may contain several instruments can be very useful.

Is it necessary to ride everything?
Some instruments may not need any Volume automation, it always depends on the Song and Musicgenre, and on the recording and instrument. For example, I’m riding very often the groups which contain different instruments, to make space for the vocal or to bring down the verse, or Intro of the song. I’m also riding effects like delays. In any case you should trust your ears to decide what to ride and what not. For some songs, genres and recordings it can work very well to leave some things at the same level over the whole song!

Riding before or after Compressor?
This also depends on the song and dynamic of the recording, but usually I do both. Before the compressor I’m riding the vocal to make sure that no unwanted parts will hit the compressor (like breathing noises,  „p“ or „s“ noises etc.). Than I ride it after the compressor to bring back in some dynamic, turn up certain phrases of the melody or bring up the vocal a bit in the Refrain. For some songs this may needed more, for some songs less. Instruments I mostly ride after the compressor, as far as they are recorded or programmed well.

Thanks for reading! :-)

BTW. The idea of writing about Fader Riding was from someone from Instagram who asked me about how I used to do it! Thanks again!!!
